Most MetaTrader problems have three or four possible causes and a fixed order in which to check them. This lesson is a reference — bookmark it, and when something does not work, find the symptom and work down the list rather than guessing.

Expert advisor activity and errors
The Journal entry for a failed order is nearly always more specific than the popup message was. This single habit resolves most issues without further investigation.
Order errors
| Error | Causes, in order to check |
|---|---|
| Invalid stops | Distance entered instead of price; stop closer than Stops level; wrong side of price |
| Invalid volume | Below minimum; not a multiple of volume step; above maximum |
| Not enough money | Insufficient free margin for that volume |
| Market closed | Outside trading hours; daily break; weekend |
| Off quotes | No liquidity; connection issue; illiquid instrument |
| Requote | Price moved; raise deviation or use market execution |
| Trade is disabled | Investor password; account restriction; instrument closed to new positions |
| Trade context busy | Another order processing; wait and retry |
Invalid stops, in detail
The most common error, with three distinct causes.
You entered a distance. Stop loss fields take prices. For EUR/USD at 1.0850 with a 30-pip stop, enter 1.0820 rather than 30.
The stop is too close. Brokers set a minimum distance, shown as “Stops level” in the contract specification. Orders inside it are rejected.
The stop is on the wrong side. A buy’s stop must be below entry and its target above. Reversing them produces the same error.
Invalid volume, in detail
Check the contract specification for minimum volume, maximum volume and volume step.
If the step is 0.01, then 0.037 is invalid — round down to 0.03.
If the minimum is 0.10 and your calculated size is 0.04, the honest reading is that your account cannot take that trade at your risk percentage. Rounding up to 0.10 more than doubles your intended risk.
Connection problems
| Symptom | Check |
|---|---|
| “No connection” | Internet; firewall; server status |
| “Invalid account” | Login, password, server name |
| Logs in, cannot trade | Investor password used |
| Server missing from list | Generic installer — reinstall from broker |
| Prices frozen | Market closed; feed interrupted — reconnect |
| Account gone | Demo expired |
To force a reconnection: File → Login to Trade Account and re-enter, or right-click the connection indicator → Rescan Servers.
Chart problems
Chart is empty or shows few bars. Insufficient history. Raise the limits under Tools → Options → Charts, then scroll back to trigger a download. MT4 also has Tools → History Center.
Indicator does not appear. Wrong folder, wrong platform version, or Navigator not refreshed. Use File → Open Data Folder rather than browsing to Program Files.
Symbol not in Market Watch. Right-click → Symbols, then find and add it. Gold is often under Metals or Spot rather than Forex.
Chart times do not match your clock. Server time, not local time. Calculate the offset once and note it.
Objects disappeared. Objects are stored per chart and per installation. They do not sync between devices and are lost if a chart is closed without saving a template.
Expert advisor problems
| Symptom | Cause |
|---|---|
| Frowning face on chart | AutoTrading disabled globally or per-EA |
| EA runs but no trades | Conditions not met; or “Allow live trading” off |
| Errors in Experts tab | Read the message — usually configuration |
| EA stops overnight | Platform closed or computer slept |
| Wrong lot sizes | Input parameters not configured |
The global AutoTrading button is the first thing to check, and it accounts for most reports of an EA not working.
For an EA that must run continuously, the platform must stay open and connected. A VPS solves this for terminal-based tools; cloud-based copiers avoid the requirement entirely by running on their own infrastructure.
Performance problems
Platform running slowly. Usually too many charts with too many indicators. Reduce open charts, remove unused indicators, lower the max bars setting.
High memory use. Same causes. Restarting the platform periodically helps.
Delayed updates. Check connection speed in the bottom right. Persistent lag with a good connection may indicate a broker-side issue.
Things that are not errors
Worth separating, because these generate support tickets that do not need to be raised.
Position opens at a small loss. You paid the spread on entry. Normal, and larger on gold and other wide-spread instruments.
Stop filled at a worse price. Slippage during fast movement. Not a malfunction — a stop closes at the best available price once your level trades.
Price differs from another broker. Different liquidity sources. Small differences are expected.
Swap charged three times. The triple swap day, accounting for the weekend.
Gold unavailable for an hour daily. The daily break. Check trading hours in the contract specification.
Read the Journal tab entry. Check the contract specification for the instrument. Confirm you used the master password. Verify the market is open. Check free margin. Confirm the volume respects minimum and step. Five of these six take under a minute, and between them they explain the large majority of platform problems.
When to contact your broker
After ruling out the above.
Useful information to include: the exact error message, the time it occurred with your timezone, the symbol and volume, and the relevant Journal tab lines.
Brokers can see server-side logs you cannot, and a specific report gets a specific answer considerably faster than a general one.
Closing the section
The platform is a tool for execution. It does not produce analysis, it does not manage risk, and it will place any position your margin allows without comment.
What this section has covered is mostly about removing mechanical failures — the wrong lot size, the missing stop, the order rejected for a reason you could have checked. Those failures are not trading mistakes in an interesting sense, and they cost money in exactly the same way.
The settings worth keeping from this section fit in a short list: default volume at minimum, one-click trading off, history limits raised, stop and target filled before submitting, contract specifications checked once per instrument.
None of it makes you a better trader. All of it prevents a category of loss that has nothing to do with whether your analysis was right.
What to do next
This completes the Trading Academy’s current sections. If you are working through in order, the sections that change outcomes most are Risk Management and Trading Psychology — not because analysis does not matter, but because most traders have adequate analysis and inadequate execution.
For daily coverage across forex, gold and indices, see our Daily Market Analysis. The calculator suite covers position sizing, pip value, margin and drawdown, and the broker licence checker verifies regulatory status before you deposit anywhere.
Our free Telegram community is open to join, and the full Trading Academy index lists every section.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I get “Invalid stops” in MT4?
Three possible causes: you entered a pip distance instead of a price level, your stop is closer than the broker’s minimum Stops level shown in the contract specification, or the stop is on the wrong side of entry.
Why is my lot size rejected as invalid volume?
It is below the minimum, above the maximum, or not a multiple of the volume step. If the step is 0.01, then 0.037 is invalid and should be rounded down to 0.03.
Where do I look when an order fails?
The Journal tab in Terminal or Toolbox. The logged reason for a rejection is nearly always more specific than the popup message, and reading it resolves most problems without further investigation.
Why did my expert advisor stop trading?
Most often the global AutoTrading button is off. Check that first, then the per-EA “Allow live trading” setting, then the Experts tab for configuration errors. An EA also stops when the platform closes or the computer sleeps.
Is it normal for a trade to open at a loss?
Yes. You pay the spread on entry — buys fill at ask, sells at bid. The effect is larger on gold and other wide-spread instruments but the mechanic is the same.
Why was my stop filled at a worse price than I set?
Slippage. A stop is an instruction to close at the best available price once your level trades, not a guarantee of that price. During fast movement the gap can be significant, which is why position size matters more than stop placement around news.
